What are some of the psychological reasons why one person suffering depression might sleep constantly and another experience acute insomnia?

study done in 07with the diagnosis saying they know SOMETHING is wrong with me but don’t know what but that it’s not narcolepsy. My regular doc thinks it’s depression which he has been diagnosing me with since I was 14. I am now 33. I do believe depression plays a part in all this, who wouldn’t be tired of ALWAYS being tired.

My other symptoms are muscle fatigue w/ knee buckling, heavy head, arms going limp, memory problems, cognitive problems, hard time controlling my anger, falling asleep at inappropriate times ie. doing sit ups, riding my bike, driving, and any time I am in a slow moving environment ie. watching tv, sitting in an office.
During my monthly all these symptoms intensify. This is usually the time I have problems controlling anger. I don’t lash out I just seem to simmer longer than usual. I also have intermittent times when I write or say things backwards, this only for the last two years. Can someone acquire Dyslexia? Also I get a tingling sensation on my face around my eyes and down my cheeks.

I have suggested to my doc that maybe I have A typical Narcolepsy and he says there is no such thing. I have four lesions on the left side of my brain and lyme disease was ruled out. I want to have spinal done to rule out MS but doc won’t do it. He believes it’s only depression and won’t listen to anything else. Yes I plan on changing docs.

So I was wondering if anyone has these same type of symptoms and what has been done about it? Has anything helped?
Sorry so long.
Thanks.

I’m suffering from excessive sleepiness during the day and excessive sleeping at night. I sleep about 13 hours a day. This is due to my depression and the antidepressants I am taking (lofepramine).

I’ve attempted to stay awake despite being so tired, and even after a couple of months I do not feel more awake. When I am tired my anxiety is much worse and my mood is lower.

A lot of people keep telling me I need to sleep less. Why do I need to sleep less when I can’t seem to function on less sleep?

I currently take 20 mg Lexapro, 18 mg Strattera, 200 mg Provigil every day and have for the past 6 or so years.
I don’t have depression or bipolar, just severe anxiety and a sleep disorder (Delayed Sleep Phase syndrome, possibly VERY low grade narcolepsy).
After having quit a 4-pack a day cigarette habit 8 years ago, I picked it right back up again after MANY personal and family problems in April of this year.
I live on Coke classic and normally eat only Chex Mix Bold (two or three times a week I also eat fast food).
I have an annoying "phobia" about eating food prepared in a home (especially MY home lol) But it’s not a serious thing, just a personality quark. But it limits my diet severely lol.

I am trying to get back on track spiritually, and I’m coming to accept my extreme nature. (Because of my sleep disorder I will stay up for days then sleep a day which made doctors consider bipolar, but it was ruled out).
I’ve been off my meds but relaxed for about 3 days now and already, my mouth is tingling and I have "adrenalin surges" which is most annoying.
I have one day of smokes left. I don’t plan on buying any more.

Other than eliminating caffeine and eating better, what can I do to keep my adrenalin from surging for NO REASON. I HATE them. They strike even when I am eating right etc but without meds.
I hate the thought of having to take these pills for the rest of my life for something so stupid that no one can thoroughly explain me.

Is it possible to have an adrenal gland defect? Because these surges occur without provocation, I have a VERY hard time accepting them as panic attacks.

Thanks to anyone who can give me advice or tips.
I am most interested now.
I have Ehlers Danlos Disease (probable type 3 though many aneurysms on my fathers side makes the vascular type probable).
It’s mostly a problem with collagen… I googled adrenal gland disorder and saw that such is sometimes caused by too much cortisol.
What’s the difference between collagen and cortisol?
Could there, indeed, be a connection?
blah… two different things lol
Thanks Stacie and Owl. :) I’ll set up a dr. app. one day soon and have it looked into. (I haven’t been to even an OBGYN for… ???… at least 6 years *yikes!*)

I tend to go off all my meds at one point in time or another (cold turkey) and the only one I had a problem with was Gabirtil (sp) and that was 7 years or so ago. I don’t like talking to my pdoc about getting off my meds because he discourages it. I see him every month and have been for around 6 years now.
But, I started taking them again because unwarranted adrenalin surges drives be bananas and I shouldn’t bite off more than I can chew at one time.
It’s going to be bad enough when my last pack of smokes runs out… But Jehovah comes first. I HAVE to stop to get back in the fold.
After that, I’ll start eating better, get off of caffeine, THEN start thinking again about going off my meds.

Much love and many thanks for the advice and prayers.

Having vivid dreams and nightmares. Just to have a quiet night of sleep sounds good. Bad dreams and hullucinations often lead to severe shaking and once a seizure. Is there a routine to follow before bed, or things to eat? A certain diet to follow? I’m on lamichtal for serizures and possibly that may contribute. Thanks! I appreciate any answer!

I do not sleep at night (frequent awakenings, cannot fall or stay asleep) more than 1-2 hours. I was told that I have depression, SAD, cirrcadin sleep disorder, eating disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness. Two polysomnograms confirmed the sleepiness. After much research, I truly believe I have some type of narcolepsy with both primary and secondary symptoms i.e. fall asleep during classes, have to sleep in my car between classes, hallucinations, memory loss and a close relative who does have it. Any ideas as to what or where I should go to be effectively diagnosed with anything at this point in time.
