Are my symptoms a sign of a hormonal imbalance?

Thursday
Nov 12,2009

Symptoms include: depression, mood swings ranging from mild to severe (markedly irritability, sadness, and aggression), some anti-social behavior, acne, racing thoughts (especially late at night), insomnia and hypersomnia, tiredness ranging from mild to severe (I very RARELY have any energy at all, and I experience no sudden bursts of energy either), and a generally pessimistic attitude. I’m 23 years old, and I have been experiencing these symptoms in some form or other for at least a decade, but these symptoms improved a great deal over the years until now. Though I attempted suicide in the past, I now have a son and would never try such a stupid thing again. However, I do want a normal outlook on life. I have been on several types of medications and have experienced no effect at all or the need for constant sleep (i.e., "feeling like a zombie"). Basically, it feels like I’m PMSing most of the time here lately. Is there a direct cause of my problems?? P.S.: Reference sites and books are greatly appreciated. =)

chronic epstein barr virus?

I fell ill in November 1997. Sore throat, fever, swollen glands, and a terrible rash. It started as small bumps on my stomach, inner legs, armpits and face, which multiplied, connected and became an uninterupted mass. My eyes used to swell almost shut, my lips and ears became huge. Most unsightly.

Each episode lasted about a week and returned every few weeks. It usually ended during the night when the fever would break, I’d wake up drenched in cold sweat, but knowing that when I woke up again in the morning the rash and all the other symptoms would be gone.

This went on until July 1999. By that time blood tests had revealed that I have the EBV. Since July 1999 the episodes have not returned, but I did become oh so very tired. I would eat to gain energy, but what I gained, of course, was weight. So I became depressed and obese. I’m taking Zooloft for the depression and that keeps it under control, but the obesity is another matter.

I dont get the sore throat, fever, swollen glands and rash anymore, but I can tick off a fair number on the remaining list of usual suspects:

“Brain Fog”
Brain “Surges”
Confusion - my short term memory is in shambles
Depression
Difficulty Reasoning
Fatigue
Hypersomnia
Increased Nasal Discharge
Loss of Interest in Activities
Malaise
Mental Symptoms alleviated by eating or drinking
Mood Swings (Mild)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive Thinking
Sinus Problems

So, given that I’m not ill as such anymore, do I have CEBV?
Thank you, everyone who has answered. I think I’ll look up the ol’ doc.

How can I combat constant sleepiness?

Thursday
Nov 12,2009

I got sick about a week or two ago, just a cold, but since then I’ve felt so weak, and sleepy all the time. I can’t wake up in the morning, and at night, it takes a long time to fall asleep, even though all day, I feel like going back to bed. I do feel depressed a lot, but this is the first time that I’ve gotten hypersomnia because of it. I can’t go to the doctor or anything like that. Anyone else have this problem? What’s wrong with me, and what can I do to get more energy?

First off, I, the person with these symptoms, is writing this. However, I will type in a third person view.

age: 13
gender: male

Background: Lives with sister, 15, and mother. major depression on both sides of family including: mother, and all four siblings, aunt and uncle of fathers side. alcohol abuse on both sides of family including: father, aunt on fathers side, grand mother on mothers side. Schizophrenic bipolar paranoid aunt on mothers side. drug abuse combined with depression and paranoia and schizophrenia resulted in suicide of uncle on fathers side. Mother divorced father when was 3 years old. began relationship with boyfriend at 5 years old. had generally positive relationship with mothers boyfriend, until mother broke up in september. Was a big alcoholic, though not violent. Patient has been diagnosed with depression. Is very articulate and cultured, very mature and highly intelligent. Has had problems since 3rd grade, now has little to no socialization with peers, though enjoys the company of adults. In 2nd year of puberty, progressing normally. patient has a love/hate relationship with mother. two are very similar, however, mother favors sister, and many other conflicts. Has bad relationship with sister and father. recently had surgery to remove extra bone in instep that impeded ambulation. is soon going to have other foot operated on. is a vegetarian. no alcohol or substance abuse. doesn’t have intercourse.

symptoms:
extreme malaise

fatigue

delayed sleep phase syndrome

insomnia (problems getting to sleep)

hypersomnia (needs 10-16 hours of sleep)

atypical nystagmus (once in a while to 10 times a day, second long
bursts of eyes moving back and forth violently, many times a second)

spasms (often times, an instant before the spasm, will experience a
chill. spasm itself is like flinging body in a direction, though not very violently.)

problems urinating (hard to force urine out, almost as if bladder urethriatic muscles weren’t working)

chronic, though mild, pain

muscle weakness (after riding bike consistently September, was much slower and had much lower endurance than the day started cycling.)

lack of emotions (besides self pity, embarrassment, and humor)

back pain

lack of a will (doesn’t brush teeth, doesn’t do schoolwork, doesn’t shower often, (although was extremely hygienic), doesn’t do fun things,
wants do do school work, wants to get out of bed, wants to fun things, knows it is good to do so, but cannot.)

abnormally cold temperatures seem normal to patient (it is not the thyroid)

obsessive hygiene tendencies controlled by medication

occasional depersonalization

medications:

Prozac 20mg, once a day in the morning. completely ineffective at treating depression. Has caused 60lbs of weight gain

trading 150mg, once a day at night for depression and insomnia. ineffective for treating depression, slight effective for treating insomnia.

used to be on abilify 2mg

all symptoms were there before meds were started. has been on meds since may.

Please help me, I feel like I am dying… any info is appreciated. I personally think that i do not have depression, as I don’t have sadness, and I am not bothered by my lack of socialization. Also, I don’t have the pessimistic views that many depressive people have.

>Diagnosis< depression like symptoms w/ spasms, nystagmus, and problems urinating not caused by medications.?

Do I have narcolepsy?????

Sunday
Nov 8,2009

I was recently diagnosed with hypersomnia after having an overnight-all day slp study that my doctor ordered. The neurologist that read my study based this off of the study alone. He is foreign and has a very thick accent and when he was asking me questions I couldn’t understand a thing he was saying. I thought he was asking me if I fall down. He was obviously talking about cataplexy/paralysis. After researching narcolepsy and getting the facts and other people’s thoughts and symptoms I understand what it is and yes, I have this. I often loose control over my right arm before and after a sleep attack. I have been in bed and couldn’t speak or move on many occasions, but I wrote this off as a dream cuz it sorta felt like a dream. It scared me to death the first time it happened. I have also swore that someone was breaking into my house, I could see it very clearly, but could not speak or move. I fall aslp on the toilet, in church, while scrapbooking, standing, driving. Is this narcolepsy

Help! Can anyone explain causes of my symptoms?

need help from people with sleeping disorders?

Sunday
Nov 8,2009

ok so, I am writing a paper for my english class and I decided to do it on sleep and how it affects your life and I need some people who have a sleeping disorder, like hypersomnia, insomnia to tell me some of their experiences and how it affects their daily life, also if you have experienced sleep paralysis I would appreciate it if you told me about your experience, I’d like you to leave your first name only and your age so that I may observe what age sections sleeping problems happen most often and so that I have proof that I did not make any stories. thank you very very much!!

Sleeping problems, undiagnosed.?

Sunday
Nov 8,2009

I have hypersomnia, in that i sleep 12+ hours at a time. I wake up tired and usually have problems waking up at all (sleep through alarm, or shut off the alarm in my sleep). I’m typically tired all through the day, but I rarely fall asleep during the day. I also have bad insomnia, most nights it takes me a very long time to fall asleep, and a lot of the time i don’t sleep at all (never for more than 48 hours though). It’s impossible for me to stay on a normal sleep schedule, day or night. I’ve tried all the basic things like exercise. I have yet to find a sleeping pill that will knock me out, including Triazolam .500mg. I do have anxiety at times and mood swings, along with some depression. I’ve had 2 sleep studies that say I get very little REM sleep and have multiple arousings during the night. They thought it might be from Apnea, but they say i barely qualify for it. They removed my tonsils and adenoids, but that didn’t help. I am currently seeing a psychiatrist, who has just been trying different meds to try to get me to sleep. If anyone could help me out by giving me an idea of what’s wrong with me or how i could find out that’d be appreciated. Or if anyone’s experienced something similar and could tell me what medications could be useful.

Do i suffer from hypersomnia?

Sunday
Nov 8,2009

For the past month, ive slept a LOT. Like about 12 hours every night and then naps in the afternoon, and im still so tired. I dont do anything. I have a few weekly things that i do, but no school or work, so there is no reason to be tired. Im only 17 and noone else in my family has a sleep disorder that i know of! What’s wrong with me?
It is also very difficult for me to wake up. I set multiple alarms and even after 12 hours of sleep, i dont hear them!
