Sleep Disorder Treatment. Awareness. Symptoms. Tests. Diagnosis. Causes. Risk Factors.
I’ve been having trouble sleeping. When I lay down I feel heaviness in my chest & my throat feels tight, it makes it hard to breathe. I flip over on my tummy, but then I start to get dizzy. I only feel this way when I try to sleep. I’ve wondered if it’s either acid reflux or anxiety. I can’t go to the doctor until my new insurance kicks in on July 1st. I try to be careful what I eat, I steer clear of spicy foods. I also try not to eat heavy meals late at night or lay down too soon after eating. Is it possible to have heartburn symptoms only when laying down? I feel fine when awake. I then wondered if it’s some strange sleep disorder, but I’m not overweight & I don’t snore so it can’t be sleep apnea. I do have a lot of stress in my life. I don’t handle stress as well as I used to. This whole year so far has been a mess for me health wise, which is why I thought maybe it’s anxiety. Can it only affect me while trying to sleep?
I was talking with a friend of mine & she thinks it’s anxiety. I’ve gotten to where I push my stress aside to make it thru the day, but then it hits me when trying to sleep. I guess that makes sense. I’ve started meditating again so these past 2 nights I slept pretty good. Stress sucks, ugh!
Okay, this is definitely anxiety! I was trying to sleep tonight, but was feeling tightness in my chest and throat, that horrible feeling I’ve felt before: a panic attack. I sat up, which helped a little bit. I got up to do some research on the net, turns out anxiety during sleep is not uncommon at all. A person dealing with a lot of stress during the day can most definitely suffer from anxiety while trying to sleep. Geez, I thought I was over this a couple of months ago! I’m going to try sleeping in a more upright position, see if that helps a little bit. For whatever the reason laying down flat makes things worse. Ugh and sighs….I don’t know if I can wait til July 1st. I might go to the hospital to have tests ran or something. They then can just bill me because this is getting ridiculous!
I was just watching oprah and the doctor on the show said that people who can fall asleep 30 sec after their head hits the pillow actually suffer from sleep deprivation. My fiance has had problems for a while now with blurred vision, headaches, less ability to function at work and no one has been able to explain it. Its not very serious but bothers him. I never thought sleep would be the problem bc he falls asleep instantly, but sleep deprivation would explain all his symptoms.
The doctor on the show didnt elaborate and I cant find anything on why people who fall asleep instantly suffer from sleep deprivation. Does anyone know anything about this or where I could read something on it? thanks
He doesnt just fall asleep at random moments in the day(not narcolepsy). He can fall asleep literally within 1 minute of laying down
I cant get to sleep at night and i don’t know why i tried to:
-Change Mattress
-Change Room
-Change Pillows (type and amount)
-Going to sleep with absolute no noise or light
And i’ve noticed:
-I don’t get to sleep until like 11:00-12:0
-Wake up constantly at night
-Always feel tired but cant sleep
-I feel uncomfortable in my own bed or another [may think thats what is causing it]
- Get Hungry alot towards night [dont think its about this but mabey it could be???]
Is there a disorder i may have based on my symptoms or is there anyway i can get to sleep? Please answer i seriously am only getting none-6 hours of sleep each night.
It’s been a little over 2 years now experiencing waking up dizzy. I have been to several doctors who can’t seem to find anything wrong.
I’ve been tested for anemia, and took some iron and was fine, but still woke up dizzy.
I don’t get dizzy just out of the blue or standing or any other time other than after I’m asleep at nights, I wake up spinning after a dream of me dancing or spinning. I think it’s because Im already feeling dizzy in my sleep. I have learned to get up and walk it off and most times I can go right back to sleep.
Sometimes while sitting too still doing something I get the sensation of falling over or a little dizzy and I kind of move around. Sometimes when I lay my head a certain way I get a bit dizzy and have to shift how I lay.
But the majority of the time I wake up out of my sleep dizzy.
I’m trying a new diet for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), because I shake when I’m too hungry sometimes and show most symptoms of this disorder, as well as for viral labyrinthitis. I’m trying to see if one of these is the cause.
Has this happened to anyone else?
What is the reason for waking up dizzy???
Thanks.

Do i suffer from Bipolar Disorder?
Racing thoughts, sleep problems increase in energy and top of the world feeling.
Hi there. I live in Glasgow, Scotland and 21 yrs old. i have been treated for clinical depression for the last 5 months or so.I am on Fluoxetine which was upped to 40mg by my GP a fortnight ago after i was experiencing racing thoughts, sleep problems and an increase in energy. This only started about a month ago. However i am seeing my GP again today as i am still only getting about 1-2 hours sleep a night and i am finding i am not tired just full of energy.Plus my thoughts have still been racing uncontrollably.Over the weekend though i was so low and couldn’t get out of bed and hardly ate.
Because i suffer from clinical depression too a friend of mine said that it sounds like Bipolar.
1)Do you think this is Bipolar?
2)When i see my GP later today and tell him these symptoms, do you think he will put me on different medication? Thanks
I see a psychitrist for my depression but i won’t be seeing her for another month or so.
In 2006 I had a car accident and had trauma to the left side of my head in the area right above where my ear is. I had a hairline fracture in my skull. I had a cat scan done and there was no brain injury sustained. Since my injury I’ve been experiencing fatigue throughout the day and trouble sleeping. Before the accident I use to sleep well with no problems and would wake up the next morning with energy all day. Now I wake up a few times during the night and only get about 5 hours of sleep, once I’m awake I cannot go back to sleep. I’ve been doing some research online and it seems quite common for people to suffer from sleep disorders after experiencing head trauma. Therefore, I believe my fatigue and various other symptoms that I use to never experience before the accident, one being irritability, is due to not getting enough sleep at night. With the research I have conducted, I have come to the conclusion that I have two options: Number one is to treat myself with time released melatonin (I believe my circadian sleep rhythms may have been disrupted), or number two going to see a sleep specialist/or maybe a neurologist instead?
Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.
does anyone get head shakes? (similar to head shakes males some times get after peeing) not the body shaking, just your head shaking/jerking a little. at most 1.5-2 seconds long.
i get them some times mostly during the day time when i’m relaxed. so, only when i’m conscious, not when i’m asleep. so it’s not a sleeping disorder. but i can get them before falling asleep and maybe conscious enough to wake from a lucid dream, but not during sleep.
it gets triggered when accessing memory, not any particular memory (so it rules out any past traumas), just the act of trying to recall memory.
i’ve done some research online and the closest physical symptom matching my case is from tourette syndrome / tics. but motor tics mainly occur in kids and stop when kids have grown up. but i’m a grown adult. never had it as a child.
i’ve asked my family doctors and a neurologist. all of them are useless.
what could be causing this? (i know i said memories but why)
what can be done to treat/cure this?
i thought about alcohol withdraws too. but as i can remember, head shakes began before my youthful drinking binges. then after i stopped drinking for awhile, head shakes continued. then i started to drink again but moderately just to see if it is alcohol withdraws, but nope, head shakes continue.
if i was, say, trying to remember a horrible past, and then the head shakes occurred, then psychological trauma can be a possibility. but that’s not the case in my case. it occurs when i’m relaxed and just trying to recall any past memories.
can it be a start of alzheimers or something? that would be freaky. and i mostly doubt it because i’m still in my 20s. plus, the shakes is only my head moving, not the entire body or parts of limbs.
any ideas?
and i think this rapid head shaking thing started when i was 18 or 19 yrs old. it occurred only seldomly back then, and when it did happen it happened right before following asleep only. as i’ve gotten older, the frequency of occuring
increased. and from just before sleep to any time of day almost. i’m 26 now. and it happens pretty much everyday now.
my husband snores like a pnematic drill, always tired during the day and has the classic symptoms of this disorder, he wakes up coughing more times than i can count…he is although a bit over weight so i’m not sure if the Doc will take this seriously? Any advice welcome thanks!
My husband has been wetting the bed lately and I am upset with the wet sheets. We went to the Urologist and he could find nothing wrong physically, he stated it may be a stress release symptom or a sleep disorder. Any suggestions? Marcie
